Special Declaration

for the Release of Father Jean-Juste From Prison in Haiti

(Read Dr. Paul Farmer’s call, below, in English)

We join our voice to Dr. Paul Farmer’s call for the immediate release of Father Gérard Jean-Juste from prison in Haiti.

We find scandalous not only the manner in which the de facto government in Haiti arrested Father Jean-Juste—as he came, from Miami, to take part at the funeral of assassinated journalist Jacques Roche on July 21, 2005, whose very murder he is accused of!—but also the complicit silence of the “international community” vis-à-vis his continued detention, six months later, on absurd charges that would have been laughable if they were not causing real harm and suffering to a great Haitian patriot; a man who has devoted his life to the struggle for human rights, be they the rights of Haitian immigrants and poor in the US, or those of the downtrodden men and women and children abused by the government and the ruling elite in Haiti.

We deplore particularly the hypocrisy and the double standard displayed by the “international community” and the influential media regarding human rights violations under the previous Lavalas regime, compared with the complacent, indifferent, even justifying attitude they demonstrate toward the savage repression exerted by the current de facto regime, in concert with the foreign occupation forces, against former officials and sympathizers of the Lavalas government. One needs only to think of the singer Sò Ann, the former Prime minister Yvon Nepturne, the former Interior minister Jocelerme Privert who are still languishing in jails on concocted charges.

Our distance from partisan politics and the power struggle within Haiti’s political class has not desensitized us from grasping and denouncing the injustice, the exploitation and the repression that continue blossom in the name of the fight for democracy and against brigandism. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Father Gérard Jean-Juste, along with all prisoners of conscience in Haiti. It’s time for this tragic charade to end.

Deklarasyon Espesyal

pou relachman Pè Jan-Jis nan Prizon ann Ayiti

(Li pi devan an apèl, an angle, Doktè Paul Farmer a)

Nou jwenn vwa nou avèk apèl Doktè Paul Farmer a pou mande relachman imedya Pè Jan-Jis nan prizon ann Ayiti.

Nou trouve li yon eskandal nan non sèlman kondisyon gouvènman de facto ann Ayiti a te arete Pè Jan-Jis la—lè li te rantre nan Pòtoprens, de Miami, pou l vin patisipe nan antèman Jacques Roche jou 21 jiyè 2005, pwòp lanmò misye yo akize Jan-Jis!—e silans konplis «kominote entènasyonal» la mentni sou detansyon li, sis mwa aprè, sou yon akizasyon absid ki tap rizib si li pat koze malè e soufrans reyèl ka yon konpatriyòt konsekan ki pase tout vi li ap goumen pou pwoteksyon dwa moun, keseswa dwa imigran ayisyen ak pòv Ozetazini, oubyen dwa ti malere ak malerèz ansanm ak timoun pouvwa malouk ak lelit dominan yo ap malmennen ann Ayiti.

Nou deplore patikilyèman ipokrizi e atitid de-pwa-de-mezi «kominote entènasyonal» la ansanm ak milye medya enfliyan yo manifeste konsènan vyolasyon dwa moun sou rejim Lavalas la, e atitid konplezan, endiferan, e menm jistifikatris yo montre vizavi represyon sovaj rejim de facto a ansanm ak fòs okipasyon etranje yo ap mennen kont ansyen dirijan ak patizan Lavalas yo. Nou ka bay pou ekzanp sò chantez Sò Ann, sò ansyen Premye minis Yvon Nepturne oubyen minis Enteryè Jocelerme Privert ki kontinye ap kwoupi nan prizon sou akizasyon fabrike.

Distans nou anvè esprideklan kan patizan e lit pou pouvwa nan sen klas politik ayisyen an pa desansibilize nou sou enjistis, esplwatasyon e represyon ki kontinye ap fleri onon lit pou demokrasi e kont brigandism.
